Clinical psychologists and counsellors help people understand their problems and find new ways of coping with their difficulties.
The service specialises in problems of physical and mental health, and works directly with clients, and through teaching healthcare staff.
What services are provided?
A clinical service to people of all ages from under 5s to adults. We see individuals and couples for psychological problems and offer consultation and advice to other health workers.
Clinical psychology and counselling service to GP practices
Clinical psychologists and counsellors are based in GP practices and health centres throughout the borough, offering a service to that particular practice population.
Bilingual counselling service
This comprises a Somali counsellor and Bengali counsellor who offer clinical services to these communities. The Bengali counsellor is sited in key practices across the borough and can also be contacted at Steel’s Lane Health Centre. The Somali counsellor is based at Steel’s Lane. Both counsellors offer a clinical service, teaching and advice to health care workers and statutory services within Tower Hamlets.
Disability counselling service
The disability counselling service is for people who become disabled due to accidents, or acquire disabilities, or who have a long-term illness. It can also provide a service to families and carers of these clients. Clients can be referred by statutory services, the voluntary sector or health workers. The service is based at Steel’s Lane but clients are seen in a wide variety of settings including their own homes.
Children’s centres psychology service
This covers all seven of the Tower Hamlets children’s centre programmes. The service provides direct clinical work in community and Sure Start settings for parents who are experiencing psychological difficulties and need help in their own right.
Where are the services provided?

In addition, a behaviour change consultancy and training service is being developed to support primary care teams and staff in promoting patient self care.
