The proposed
merger of Barts and The London, Newham and Whipps
Cross NHS Trusts is continuing to progress, with the earliest time for
establishing a new merged organisation is April 2012.
At their meetings in July,
the three trust boards approved the outline business case (OBC), which is the
first step in a detailed approval process. On 4 August NHS
London agreed that plans for the potential merger can continue to be
developed. A final decision to merger will be considered following the
publication of the full business case later this year, and will require
Department of Health and Secretary of State approval.
The proposed
new trust would provide community, secondary and tertiary services, with a
workforce of around 15,000. The guiding principle behind the proposed merger is
to build on existing best practice and clinical expertise from within all three
trusts and ensure that this is used to the maximum benefit of patients. The
vision is to create a world-class healthcare organisation that is recognised
internationally and helps our local population in north east London to achieve
the highest health status possible. The scale of the merger would ensure the
delivery of significant improvements in health inequalities across our diverse
and unique community, whilst also ensuring local service provision.
You can find
more information about the proposed merger and the benefits it will bring to
patients, staff and stakeholders in a 12-page document entitled A vision of future healthcare
for local people.
