Public health

The public health directorate is responsible for improving and protecting the health of people in Tower Hamlets, working closely with colleagues across the NHS,  the London Borough of Tower Hamlets,  the voluntary sector and other organisations.

A joint director of public health (Dr Ian Basnett) was appointed by NHS Tower Hamlets and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to lead on this work.

Tackling causes of ill health

Our work is shaped by the particular needs of the borough.  We are closely involved in the development and delivery of local strategies to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. This includes tackling major causes of ill health such as smoking, obesity and lack of physical activity.

Public health report

We are also involved in ensuring that the development of services effectively meets local health needs. We produce an annual public health report to keep people informed of our priorities and our progress.
