Public health

The public health directorate is responsible for improving and protecting the health of people in Tower Hamlets, working closely with colleagues across the NHS, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the voluntary sector and other organisations.

Our work is shaped by the particular needs of the borough. We are closely involved in the development and delivery of local strategies to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. This includes tackling major causes of ill health such as smoking, obesity and lack of physical activity.

Our teams

Our directorate is headed by Dr Ian Basnett, a joint appointment with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The public health directorate is made up of five teams each with different areas of responsibility. All the teams are headed by an associate director.
