NHS Tower Hamlets is always looking for new and innovative ways to help improve the health of local people.
Our staff work in partnership with community and voluntary organisations, residents groups and the council to deliver best possible services.
During 2008, our successes have been recognised at national level in a number of awards.
World class commissioning award
Tower Hamlets council and the primary care trust triumphed in the world class commissioning category at the Health Services Journal awards in December 2008. See Award winning council and PCT.
Making mobility happen
Our wheelchair services team, in partnership with the Whizz-Kidz charity, won the Dignity in care award at the 2008 Health and Social Care Awards for their joint ‘Making mobility happen’ initiative.
Launched in March 2007, ‘Making mobility happen’ provides mobility equipment and training that is not readily available on the NHS, to young wheelchair users in Tower Hamlets.
Get the right treatment
The Adopt, adapt and improve award, at the 2008 Health and Social Care Awards, was won by our urgent care team for its work in encouraging local people to Get the right treatment.
Using a range of innovative marketing techniques, the team delivered a campaign which was designed to help Tower Hamlets residents choose the most appropriate healthcare services.
Helping people to give up smoking
Work by NHS Tower Hamlets in partnership with the council and the London Muslim Centre to help people give up smoking, was recognised with a place in the finals of a national award.
The work went through to the final of the Local Government Chronicle and Health Service Journal Sustainable Communities Awards, in the tackling health inequalities category.
Barkantine lifts an award
At the first annual national LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) awards in March 2008, East London and City LIFT Co won an award for innovation for The Barkantine, our new health and well-being centre on the Isle of Dogs.
The award was given for a variety of reasons including the innovative services provided from the centre as well as the recycled materials used for building the centre and its energy efficiency.
