NHS Tower Hamlets is serious about working towards services and policies that meet the needs of our local communities, staff and stakeholders.
We strive to ensure that the equalities duties such as The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, and the Equalities Act 2006 are embedded in how we deliver and promote services which are accessible and appropriate.
Corporate commitment
Further information can be found under in our single equality scheme, which demonstrates how equality and diversity is at the heart of what we do and reinforces the message and commitment in our equality and diversity charter. The scheme sets out how NHS Tower Hamlets will promote inclusive services and eliminate unlawful discrimination in relation to age, sexual orientation, religion and belief, race, gender and disability.
Stonewall
We are committed to working positively to reinforce the benefits of a diverse staff population, which helps to enrich the services we offer. We are in the top 100 employers for gay people according to a Stonewall survey for the fourth year in a row. We have been ranked 45th, up from 58th last year, and are the highest ranked NHS body in London to feature in the top 100.
Two Ticks health and disability
We are also committed to supporting people with disabilities and long-term health conditions in the workplace. We have achieved the 'Two tick' symbol awarded by Jobcentre Plus to employers who have taken action to meet commitments in employment, retention, training and career development. Furthermore, this year (2010) we are taking part in the disability standard which is a management tool that will enable us to accurately measure our performance on disability.
Workforce to reflect the community
We have developed a joint strategy with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to ensure career opportunities in local public services are accessible and attractive to suitably skilled local people.
Equalities team
We have a new team in place to raise the profile of and provide additional support around the six strands of equalities: race/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age, gender and religion and belief.
